Power Source

Chargers convert power from the power source, generator, or shore supply into DC power to store energy and recharge batteries.

DC Power System

Unlike a generator, solar panels create DC electricity where electrons only flow one way. DC electricity is housed in your batteries and can only be used by devices (12V or 24V) that run off DC without an inverter. In most cases, you’ll need an inverter to convert it into AC electricity. A DC power system includes wiring, circuit breakers, and distribution panels to manage and protect the DC circuits.

AC Power System

The AC power system steps up the voltage to standard 120V or 240V AC for higher-power needs. This allows you to run larger appliances, tools, and shore power hookups. The AC system has its own wiring, circuit breakers, and distribution panels.

Marine electrical systems and their efficiency vary depending on the size of the vessel. Smaller boats may operate on a 12V DC power system and use one or two house batteries. These boats don’t require an AC electrical system. In contrast, larger boats like yachts and catamarans usually have a DC power system and a separate house electrical system that runs on AC power.
